The
History of PSN
The Positive Support Network (PSN) was set up in 1992 in response to the needs of those caring for People Living with HIV on the Central Coast. There were no support services available other than those offered in Sydney or Newcastle. A donation from a local group and support from the Holden Street Sexual Health Clinic allowed the dream to begin to become a reality.
Volunteers were recruited from all areas of the community and the first training course was held in a garage. The first of many premises to be occupied by PSN over the years was at the Holden Street Sexual Health Clinic in Gosford. Shortly after taking up residence at Holden Street, the organisation became an incorporated association in its own right and applied for NSW Government funding soon after. In 1993, PSN was successful in gaining funding from the NSW Health Department for its own office space and the employing of a part time Co-ordinator to administer the newly formed community based organisation. Our core funding is now provided by NSW Health in conjunction with the Central Coast Local Health District.
Throughout the years we have been fortunate to have had a team of dedicated Committee Members and Volunteers, who have worked long hours and provided their support to ensure the best service and quality care has been made available to our clients, partners, family, carers and friends. Much of our work is possible due to the on-going efforts of a few dedicated individuals who give their time generously for fundraising activities which ultimately support the needs of our clients.
From the original small group and their vision of the service, PSN has expanded and learned much since its humble beginnings in 1992. Our role has expanded from providing emotional, physical, social and practical support and education to PLHIV to becoming a Non Government Organisation (NGO) that continues to strive to provide quality HIV/Sexual Health promotion initiatives and a range of complementary therapies and support services for its clients. PSN also provides community awareness initiatives through its Positive Speaker Program in local High Schools and annual AIDS Awareness Week/World AIDS Day events.
PSN is recognised by other service providers and groups as a organisation that has partnerships with both the general community as well as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) communities.
